Can You Bring Kratom on a Plane?

This poignant quote from some unknown source learned in an uncertain grade school class resonates, particularly now. During the COVID-19 lockdown, one of our greatest joys — travel — was no longer available to us. All we could do is sit and wait until everyone is safe once again.

But, as soon as worldwide travel opens up again, we plan to embark on a series of journeys. This has us thinking about traveling with kratom. Can you fly with kratom? Where Can You Fly With Kratom?

From road trips to plane trips, it’s vital that you know exactly where kratom is illegal. You don’t want to enter any state where it’s not allowed — no matter which method you’re using to travel. NEVER bring kratom into the following US states:

• Indiana
• Rhode Island
• Vermont
• Wisconsin
• Arkansas
• Alabama

It shouldn’t be any surprise that these states have the strictest, most draconian possession laws in the entire United States. While you may love the rolling dunes of Indiana and the maple trees of Vermont, leave the kratom behind when you travel in these areas. While you can bring kratom on a plane, you don’t want to land with it in your baggage here.

Road Trips with Kratom

Even if you’re just passing through one of the above states on a road trip with some powdered kratom in your bag, you’re still taking a risk. While kratom doesn’t have a smell and powdered kratom is hard to recognize, we recommend following the law at all times. Don’t try to disguise your kratom in other containers or remove the labeling from the bottles. If you get caught, you may have to deal with a felony for possession.

Flying with Kratom

For those wondering if you can bring kratom on a plane because of its sensitivity to altitude and temperature, you should know that your product will most likely survive. You can pack your kratom in a checked bag (properly sealed, of course), but we recommend keeping it in your personal bag. You never know exactly what kind of conditions airline staff subject your bag to before it’s returned to you.

It is currently still legal to travel with kratom, but the TSA may still pull your bag out of the security line and poke around. It may take some time to explain exactly what it is and why you can bring kratom on a plane, but it’s best to avoid this as much as possible. Don’t conceal your kratom unnecessarily.

Liquid Bans

If you have kratom in liquid form instead of as a powder, you might have a few additional hurdles to overcome. Airport security still has bans on liquid in containers larger than 100mL, so we recommend double-checking that your kratom tincture containers meet these limits. You don’t want your kratom to go in the trash if the TSA decides it’s too large. Check the regulations of the airport as well as the airline to make sure you can bring kratom on the plane.

Overseas Travel

While it is indeed possible to take kratom overseas, we would strongly advise against it. Much like in America, a distinction between local and federal laws can be problematic. Even if you’re just going to Canada, we would advise against traveling with kratom. There are simply too many unknowns, language barriers, and laws that non-locals don’t quite grasp in full. Each country also has different regulations and security precautions, and customs may not allow you to keep your kratom if they think it presents too high of a risk.
