Is Kratom Legal in Arizona?

Open Sidebar

Arizona is home to more than 7 million residents, and the population continues to grow at a rapid pace. If you’re thinking of moving to or visiting the Grand Canyon State and you love kratom, you’re probably asking the obvious question: Is kratom legal in Arizona? Kratom laws and regulations vary significantly from state to state, as legislators across the country can’t seem to agree on how this natural botanical should be handled. So what’s the deal with Arizona kratom?

Is Kratom Legal in Arizona?

Yes, kratom is legal in Arizona. It’s legal to buy, sell, and manufacture, and it has very few restrictions. You do have to be at least 18 years old to buy kratom, and you’re prohibited from buying or selling certain adulterated kratom substances, but as long as the kratom is natural and you’re a legal adult, you can enjoy it without fear.

In 2014, a group of legislators did seek to ban kratom throughout the state. Specifically, the legislators wanted to classify kratom’s two primary alkaloids as Schedule I controlled substances (similar to what Wisconsin did that same year). But the bill died before it ever reached the state Senate.

Is Kratom Regulated in Arizona?

Yes, Arizona kratom is regulated according to the terms of the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA). The KCPA is the brainchild of the American Kratom Association (AKA), a nationwide advocacy organization committed to introducing sensible kratom regulations at the state level. Among other things, the KCPA sets minimum age restrictions for kratom and also imposes quality restrictions—such as requiring that kratom contains no synthetic ingredients, no contaminants, no foreign adulterants, and no more than 2% of the alkaloid 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Arizona’s own version of the KCPA was unveiled in 2019. House Bill 2550 was met with bipartisan support and signed into law by Gov. Doug Ducey. The Arizona KCPA is similar to versions enacted in states like Georgia, Nevada, and Oregon, and it has helped to promote a safer kratom marketplace throughout the Grand Canyon State.
